In a desperate attempt to combat drugs or other items being delivered into the prison inside tennis balls served from outside of the prison walls or balls hit outside with messages or items hidden in them, their "sport activity" was banned. The rackets on the roof are the result of angry prisoners response to the announcement.
Images from the "Dogs' yard"
This place housed a large number of prisoners where they had to spend at times up to 8 hours of the day. The pergola is a recent addition to the yard. This open space is where all social activities took pace sometimes in the scorching heat or rain, "pecking order" established etc. Guards did not enter this place but took turns monitoring them from a first floor caged balcony.
Its reputation earned this place its nickname "The dogs' yard"

Orbs at death row solitary cells
This place is reported to have regular activity, especially cells 9 and 10. These solitary cells housed the prisoners of death row, only entering a couple of hours before execution where they could have a glass of whiskey and see a priest. Their journey between here and the gallows only took a couple of minutes.
